Character of the Week: Jaxxon

Jaxxon is a different kind of Star Wars character. He’s been around since the late ’70s, but you may not have heard of him if you didn’t read the original Marvel comics run. This 2-meter high green bunny may look like a silly kids cartoon but he’s actually a hero in disguise.

Who is Jaxxon?

Jaxxon or Jax is a Lepi smuggler and captain of the Rabbit’s Foot. Lepi are an intelligent species known for being tall and scrawny with long ears much like a rabbit. He is acquainted with Han Solo but thinks he is a far better pilot than him. Though he debuted in 1977 in the original Marvel Comics series, Jaxxon didn’t become canon until the Star Wars Adventures comic series annual two years ago. The first time we are introduced to Jax is in ‘The Lost Eggs of Livorno” in the 2018 Star Wars Adventures Annual. He makes a return appearance in “Hare-Brained Heist” in the 2019 Annual.

In his first appearance Jaxxon is asked by Prizzi, Queen of Livorno, to deliver eggs containing what is left of her species to Princess Leia. He is reluctant to get involved because of a friendly back and forth he has with Han Solo. In the end, he takes the assignment.

For as silly as Jax’s character is, he is isn’t there only for comic relief. He has a serious side too. He is a good mechanic, quick with a blaster and a comeback, and just like his rival Han Solo, is there to save the day.

Other Appearances

Could that be Jaxxon on the left?

While I was doing research on Jaxxon I came across two episodes of Star Wars: Forces of Destiny that contain brief cameos from a Lepi. It’s not known for sure that its Jaxxon, but the character does bear a striking resemblance to Jaxxon, right down to the red and white jumpsuit. You’ll find the Lepi character featured in the background of two episodes from season 2, “Bounty Hunted” and “Triplecross.”

Overall Thoughts

I was not familiar at all with Jaxxon before I started researching this article. I saw the cover of the two comics and thought to myself, “that character is canon?” After I read the two comics I saw a lot of parallels between Jaxxon and Han Solo. Jaxxon is a smuggler with a big heart, a cocky pilot, always interested in a new adventure, and always getting into a little trouble along the way. Do these all sound familiar? They should because all of them are also characteristics of Han Solo. So even though Jaxxon is a tall green rabbit-like alien his personality is deep-rooted in the Star Wars Universe.

Jaxxon has long been thought of as a joke among Star Wars fans. He looks like Bugs Bunny in a flight suit, so it makes sense. But like Han, Jax’s other side makes him shine. Now that he’s an official part of Star Wars canon, I hope we see more of his adventures.
