Star Wars Squadrons Leaked by Xbox Store

Information about a new Star Wars game was leaked online this morning in an early listing on Microsoft’s Xbox website. EA confirmed Star Wars Squadrons by stating that the first trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons will drop on Monday, June 15 at 8 am PT/11 am ET on YouTube.

Return of the Rogue Squadron?

The new game will possibly be a new starfighter game related to the fan-favorite Rogue Squadron series which last saw a release on Nintendo’s Game Cube. The store listing featured a button that simply read, “Pilots wanted” further suggesting that Star Wars: Squadrons is a pilot game.

The leaked image of the game features a TIE fighter pilot as well as a Rebel pilot which might suggest the game will feature both sides engaging in combat. The game may be part of the rumored Project Maverick that would mean this is one of EA Motive’s rumored Star Wars projects. Motive has worked on EA Star Wars games before, previously developing the single-player campaign for Star Wars: Battlefront II.

EA is set to host a digital EA Play event next week on June 18, which could be the perfect opportunity to reveal Star Wars: Squadrons.

Tie-In to Alphabet Squadron?

Yrica Quell of Alphabet Squadron, possible lead in Star Wars Squadron?

It’s also possible that the game ties into the book series Alphabet Squadron by Alexander Freed. Freed is a video game writing veteran, having written the story for Battlefront II among other games. The second book in the series, Shadow Fall, releases later this month.

Given the subject matter of the books and Freed’s previous game work, not to mention the resemblance the key art’s Rebel pilot bears to Alphabet’s leader Yrica Quell, we might see either a tie-in or at least be able to experience the adventures of the Alphabet Squadron.

We’ll find out more next week.
