COVID-19 Changes to Galaxy’s Edge Character Interactions

If you have ever been to a Disney park and met a character you know that typically characters are only in certain areas of the park. They meet with guests one group at a time, take a few pictures, and that’s it. It can be magical but it’s not very immersive. In the past, at Galaxy’s Edge things were different. Characters roamed around in the crowds just like regular citizens of Batuu. But since the COVID-19 shutdown things have changed. Here are all the COVID-19 changes to Galaxy’s Edge Character Interactions you can expect on your next trip to Galaxy’s Edge.

Changes to Galaxy’s Edge Character Interactions

Social Distancing

One of the biggest changes to Galaxy’s Edge character interactions is social distancing. Galaxy’s Edge has always taken Disney’s immersion to a whole another level. Character interactions are no exception. Characters were able to walk amongst the guests and interact with them just like ordinary citizens of Batuu.

But now that social distancing rules are in place things have changed. Characters no longer walk around in the crowd. Characters also aren’t wearing face coverings. So you can only see them at a distance. The few times we have been to Galaxy’s Edge since the reopening we have spotted Vi Moradi, Rey, and Chewbacca over near the Droid Depot in the Garage area. We also saw Kylo Ren and Stormtroopers in the First Order area on the stage in front of the TIE Echelon.

Pictures with Characters

Before the shutdown characters especially the resistance ones would take pictures with guests. Kids especially those that dress up as characters seemed to get the most attention. But since the shutdown due to COVID-19 the characters are not available for pictures with guests. You can take pictures of the characters.

Crowd Interaction

The characters aren’t able to walk around and interact with guests that way but they do take the time to talk to the guests that stop to take pictures or interact with them. On one of our recent trips, I had a great interaction with Vi Moradi. She noticed I was wearing a Darth Vader and said I still had potential.

Overall Thoughts on the Changes

Galaxy’s Edge had the immersion thing down before the COVID-19 shutdown. The character interaction was a special part of that experience. It’s not the same as it was but Disney is making the best out of a bad situation. I will say that the character interaction you get a Galaxy’s Edge is far better than a traditional Disney meet and greet.
